Marae · Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu
A marae built for generations.
Murihiku Marae’s redevelopment brings community spaces, learning and environmental care together for Waihōpai Rūnaka.
Murihiku Marae reopened on 2 June 2023 after a major redevelopment. Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu describes a place designed to honour its past while supporting community life into the future.
The design includes solar panels, rainwater collection and wetlands to treat stormwater. Alongside meeting and learning spaces, the redevelopment supports the rūnaka’s vision for community services and emergency response. These were stated purposes in the 2023 account, rather than outcomes independently measured by maori.health.
